This division was made on the basis of the four major classifications in ancient Indian Musicology; Ghana Vadya - Idiophonic, or self-vibrators; Avanaddha Vadya- Membraphonic, or skin-vibrators; Sushir Vadya- Aerophonic,or wind-vibrators and Tat Vadya- Chordophonic, or string-vibrators. This classification was further augmented by reference to the standard works of eminent Western authorities, F. W. Galpin, Dr. Curt Sachsand Nicholas Bessaraboff. |
